In an extraordinary and deeply welcome decision today, a Massachusetts court rebuked actions taken by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that attempted to override established vaccine policy and dismantle the nation’s long-standing scientific advisory process.
The court ruled that Kennedy’s unilateral changes to federal vaccine guidance were outside the bounds of his authority and inconsistent with the legal framework governing national immunization policy. Equally significant, the ruling condemned the abrupt dismissal of the professional members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and their replacement with individuals widely known for anti-vaccine activism.
For decades, ACIP has been one of the most respected scientific advisory bodies in the world. Its recommendations guide vaccination policy across the United States and inform decisions made by physicians, hospitals, insurers, and public health departments. The committee operates through transparent review of scientific evidence, conflict-of-interest safeguards, and rigorous debate among experts in infectious disease, pediatrics, epidemiology, and immunology.
The attempt to purge that expertise and replace it with ideological actors was not merely a bureaucratic reshuffling. It represented a fundamental assault on the scientific integrity of American public health.
Vaccination policy must not be run as an ideological crusade.
