Public Health Voices: Commentary by Irwin Redlener
A woman exposed to hantavirus on a cruise ship has been held in federal quarantine in Nebraska for weeks — even after CDC's own medical experts recommended she be allowed to return home to Florida to finish her monitoring period there.
The CDC reviewer, backed by senior infectious disease specialists, concluded in a formal nine-page report that home monitoring was adequate to protect public health. Florida agreed to daily telehealth check-ins. That should have been the end of it.
Instead, RFK Jr. overrode the recommendation — with no scientific counter-argument, no engagement with the expert findings, nothing.
This is what the corruption of public health governance and oversight looks like. Unimaginable that a cabinet secretary with no medical training would ignore his own agency's experts to keep a healthy woman detained against her will.
She called herself "a hostage." She’s right – and Kennedy must be held accountable.
This is only the latest example of Kennedy's dangerous and bizarre incompetence. He has no business running American public health. He has actively undermined vaccine policy, gutted CDC staffing, and now overrides his own agency's scientific judgment without explanation or justification.
RFK Jr. is a genuine threat to the health and safety of the American people. Call me optimistic, but, at some point, even Trump will have had enough. The American people surely have.
